Quick Caffeine Facts
How much caffeine per day is safe?
For most healthy adults, up to 400mg of caffeine per day is generally considered safe by the FDA and EFSA. Pregnant women should limit intake to under 200mg per day.
Does steep time affect caffeine content?
Yes! Longer steeping extracts more caffeine from tea leaves. A 1-minute steep may extract only 50-60% of available caffeine, while 5+ minutes can extract nearly all of it. Our Light/Balanced/Strong settings approximate this effect.
Does tea have less caffeine than coffee?
Generally, yes. A typical cup of tea contains 20-70mg of caffeine, while a cup of coffee averages about 95mg. However, some teas like matcha can contain comparable amounts due to consuming the whole leaf.
What is L-theanine and how does it interact with caffeine?
L-theanine is an amino acid found almost exclusively in tea. It promotes calm relaxation and works synergistically with caffeine to provide focused alertness without the jitters commonly associated with coffee.
Can I drink tea before bed?
Caffeine has a half-life of about 5-6 hours. If you're sensitive to caffeine, avoid tea at least 6 hours before bed. Herbal teas (caffeine-free) are a great evening option.
